The 1958 Eden High School Cross-Country Team

This remarkable team set records and established an enduring legacy of athletic excellence in high school cross-country competition. It is the first athletic team inducted into the Eden High School Hall of Fame. Formed in 1955 by the legendary Eden coach Dan Hagan, the team began with five freshmen from the Class of 1959. Those runners were Kenny Franz, Bill Gerspacher, Marvin Horton, and co-captains Bob Maltby and Chuck Vara. Art Gerspacher, George Graovac, Jim Mackey, Harvey Persinger, Jim Potter, Ron Richardson, Richard Towns and Henry Wilson joined the team in subsequent years; and all were on the 1958 team.
Coached by John Lindberg and managed by John Persinger the team won both the Division II and the Section 6 championships. 1958 was a outstanding year for the team. They won every divisional and sectional meet. In three of the meets, the team had perfect scores. The first five over the finish line were Eden runners. The team also set a New York State record for public schools by winning a 4th consecutive sectional title. For this, the team was permanently awarded the championship trophy.
This great cross-country team embodies the spirit and attributes Americans value so highly: stamina, endurance, perseverance and determination. Of all the teams that ever ran and played on the athletic fields of Eden High School, this team is one of the greatest. The 1958 Cross-Country Team brought great credit upon themselves, Eden High School, and the entire Eden Community.
