Eden Athletic Hall of Fame

The Eden Central School Alumni Association and the Eden Athletic Hall of Fame announce the formation of a cooperative venture to resurrect, rejuvenate and reactivate the Hall of Fame which has not held a formal induction ceremony since 1999.

Mission Statement: 
To recognize and honor those coaches, administrators, individuals and/or teams who attended Eden High School and excelled athletically while demonstrating a high degree of sportsmanship. leadership and character.

The Hall of Fame was founded in 1992 and had 53 members on its roster. The Eden Athletic Hall of Fame has established a new steering and nominating committee under the chairmanship of retired school administrator Don Fregelette. The committee has elected a new class of members to the Hall of Fame.

The new 2008 Inductees were honored at the induction ceremony which took place at the annual ECS Alumni Association Dinner-Dance at Duffy Hall in Eden on July 19, 2008. There was also a reception introducing the new inductees to the current Hall of Fame members on Saturday, July 18th at the Eden VFW.

Next year's Hall of Fame induction ceremony will again be held at Duffy Hall at the annual Alumni Dinner Dance on July 18, 2009. There will also be an Inductee Reception, Friday July 17th at the Eden American Legion Post.

CLASS of 1978
William Lindquist

Bill was a 3-sport athlete – football, basketball and baseball. He earned a total of 7 varsity letters and was captain in every sport his senior year. In football, Bill was a Division All-Star his senior year and tri-captained the South squad in the North-South Outstanding Senior All-Star game. Additionally, he was the Eden Senior Football Player of the Year. Baseball was probably Bill’s best sport leading his team to a division championship in 1978. He earned All-Star honors in his sophomore, junior and senior years. He had over 20 hits each season with a 412 batting average his senior season. Bill was named Senior Co-Athlete of the Year and was a candidate for the Billy Kelly Award. After high school, Bill played college football for four years.

CLASS of 1984
Bert Weidner

Bert was a 3-sport athlete – football, basketball and baseball. He earned a total of 6 varsity letters and was the Eden Athlete of the Year in 1984. He was captain of the football and baseball teams his senior year. Bert has a “sweet spot” in his heart for baseball. He was a power hitter, a student of the game who worked hard. Bert had a .455 batting average his senior year with 58 RBIs for his career. He was Co-Senior Baseball Player of the Year and played in the Outstanding Senior All-Star game. Bert was named an ECIC Division IV All-Star in his junior and senior years. In football, Bert’s accomplishments are legendary – he was named to the All-WNY First Team as a linebacker in 1983 and Defensive MVP of the annual North-South All-Star football game. Bert was recruited for Division 1 football by several schools and selected Kent State for his college football career. At Kent State he received numerous awards and was inducted into the Kent State Hall of Fame in 2000. Bert was drafted 288th overall by the Miami Dolphins in1989 and went on to play 8 years of professional football with Hall of Fame coach Don Shula and quarterback Dan Marino. He played in 90 games in his NFL career including 7 play-off games.

CLASS of 1988
William Weidner

Bill was a 3-sport athlete – football, basketball and baseball – excelling in all 3 and earning 9 varsity letters in his high school career and was athlete of the year in 1988. Bill was captain of all 3 sports during his senior year. In football, Bill still holds several passing records at Eden including single season and career records in pass attempts, completions, yards gained and touch-down passes. He was selected to the North-South Senior All-Star game and named to the All-WNY football and All-State football teams in both his junior and senior years. In basketball, Bill was an outstanding rebounder and scorer who scored 35 points in one game and held the record for most points in a season. He was a First Team Division All-Star for two years. Bill was a 3-year starter on the varsity who collected 57 hits during his junior and senior years. As a power hitter, he batted .508 including 4 homeruns in his senior season and was consistently high in RBIs. Bill was Co-Senior Baseball Player of the Year and was a Division IV All-Star for two years and played in the Outstanding Senior Baseball Game. After high school, Bill played quarterback at UB and is currently the Varsity Basketball coach and Athletic Director at North Collins High School.

CLASS of 1989
Susan Gracz

Sue was a 3-sport athlete earning 10 Varsity letters in cross-country, basketball and track and field and Athlete of the Year honors in 1989. Sue captained all 3 sports excelling in track and field. She still holds the school record in the high jump (5’3”) and participated in the New York State Track and Field Championship in that event in 1989. Sue was the Co-Most Valuable Player in track her senior season. In basketball, Sue used her jumping ability to collect 184 rebounds and scored 245 points from the guard position her senior season. She was named a First Team Division All-Star and scored 25 points in her final playoff game. Sue was co-most valuable senior in basketball. After high school, Sue had an outstanding indoor and outdoor track and field career at SUNY Cortland. She achieved All – American status, won league championships in the indoor high jump and was an indoor pentathlon champion for two years. Sue is currently teaching physical education in the Scotia-Glenville School District.

CLASS OF 1989
Jeffrey Hine

Jeff was a 3-sport athlete - football, basketball and baseball. He earned 7 varsity letters during his career and captained all three teams in his senior year. In football, Jeff was a First Team Division All-Star in his senior season and had a school record 3 interceptions in a single game at defensive back. He was selected to play in the North-South Senior All-Star game. In basketball, Jeff was a Division All-Star and Honorable Mention All-WNY his senior year. He tied the single season scoring record (401 points) from the previous season held by Bill Weidner. Jeff scored a school record setting 37 points in a game, and tied the school record held by hall of famer Scott Miller for field goals in a game. In baseball, Jeff tied a single season school record for homeruns and collected 50 RBIs during his junior and senior years. As a pitcher, Jeff had a terrific pick off move and a low ERA. Jeff was a two-year division First Team All-Star and Second Team All WNY selection in his senior year. He also played in the North-South Senior All-Star game where he earned Co-MVP honors. After Eden, Jeff played baseball at the collegiate and semi-pro level.

CLASS of 1994
Shawna Klein

Shawna earned 14 varsity letters in the sports of cross-country, soccer, basketball and track and field. She was named Athlete of the Year and was captain of the basketball and track teams her senior year. In basketball, Shawna was a 4-year starter and held numerous records including free throws made in a single season (64), points made in a single season (313), three-point field goals for a single season (9), steals in a single season (169), career steals (406), and career points (799). Shawna was named an ECIC Division First Team All-Star in her junior and senior years and All ECIC First Team and Honorable Mention All WNY her senior year. Additionally, she was Eden’s Most Valuable Senior. Shawna played in the WNY All-Star Senior Basketball Game. Shawna ran cross-country for four-years (8th – 11th grades) earning Division All-Star status all four years and was a 3-year sectional participant. Track was probably Shawna’s best sport. She set school records in the 100, 200, 400 and 800-meter distances. She participated in the State Track Meet in the 100 meters and was Eden’s Most Valuable Senior. After graduation, Shawna played 2 years of college basketball at Hilbert College and is currently the Varsity Basketball Coach at the Charter School for Applied Technology in Buffalo.

CLASS of 1996
Theodore Bucierka

Ted was a 3-sport athlete – football, basketball and baseball - earning 5 varsity letters. He was an outstanding football player serving as team captain his junior and senior years. Ted was a First Team Division All-Star and selected as Divisional Defensive Player of the Year in his junior and senior years. He won the Fred Barone Award for Best Defensive Player in the Section VI class C championship game in both his junior and senior years and the Mike Mamula Award for best overall Defensive Player in the Section VI Football Playoffs in his senior season. Ted was selected to the All-WNY First Team Defense in his senior year and captained the WNY North-South Senior All-Star Football game receiving the “Spirit” Award. Additionally, Ted received the Eden HS Coaches Award. Ted played college football at both UB and Buffalo State and has been in the United States Marine Corps since 2000 and is currently a Captain serving with the Marines Special Operations Command.
